Meet The Mayhem
Meet The Mayhem
What do you get when you cross two North Florida good ole boys, a Minorcan background, the love of the outdoors, good cooking and the datil pepper? You get the Mayhem Brothers, Troy Main and Scott Murray. Best friends for 45+ years, they pride themselves on being just a couple of fun-loving regular family guys who think they are comedians and love hanging out with friends and family. Why do they call themselves Mayhem? Wherever they go, the mayhem of laughter and shenanigans are sure to follow.
How we got here
In 1883, Troy’s Great Great grandfather, Rev. A.E. Main moved his family from upstate New York to Pomona Park, Florida for a better life and to become a farmer. Over the years, they grew oranges, watermelons, tung oil trees, ferns, grapes, and raised livestock as well on the farm.
Scott was born into a rich tapestry of Minorcan culinary heritage. Hailing from a long line of Datil pepper cultivators, the art of growing these fiery peppers was practically ingrained in his DNA. His culinary journey was guided, and nurtured by his grandmother, MeMa, whose skilled hands crafted traditional Perlow, Gopher Stew, Minorcan Clam Chowder, and of course her Datil pepper hot sauce, “Hot Stuff”, which became the inspiration for our Mayhem Original today.
That generations old recipe stayed with the family until 2009 when Scott and his brother Hampton gave a version of MeMa’s “Hot Stuff” to Troy. Loving it so much, he wanted to make more but soon realized that no one sold datil peppers. No store, vegetable stand, or farmers market could even get them. You had to know a friend, of a friend, of a friend who had a datil pepper plant; you then begged or bartered for a couple of pounds.
After years of searching for datil peppers, Troy decided to grow his own 18 heirloom datil pepper plants. Over the years they have continually added more and more plants and today boost almost 2,000 heirloom datil pepper plants on Troy’s 100-acre family farm. They proudly ship fresh datil peppers, seeds, and Mayhem Original anywhere in the contiguous United States.
