The Datil Pepper is the best kept secret in the chili world!
- Capsicum chinense jacquin - The Datil Pepper has a Scoville rating between 100K and 325K.
- The history of the Datil is unclear; some experts believe that 300 years ago the Minorcans, traveling through the Caribbean, collected Scotch Bonnet peppers for spices. The seeds collected from the peppers were planted much further north, that change in the temperate zone, soil type, and pollinators just to name a few, changed the Scotch Bonnet into the Datil Pepper we love today. Other experts opinions include being related to the Fatalii and Habanero, brought through Cuba, but lineage has never been fully connected.
- The finicky Datil Pepper is one of the hardest peppers to grow, especially in large volumes! They need consistent attention: pruning, rotating, pollinating, fertilizing, and lots of TLC. Our Datils seem to grow better when we play Reggae for "dem" a few hours a week!
- The Mayhem Brothers ONLY grow Heirloom Datil Peppers (no hybrids!) Each year, we replant heirloom Datil Pepper plants from our own seed stock, assuring no cross contamination. We ONLY grow Hot Datil Peppers.
- 9 Datil Pepper Grow Seasons of Experience! We passionately believe we grow the best datil peppers available anywhere!
